When hiking at Great Sand Dunes National Park, it’s easy to think you're on a foreign, desolate planet. Those that make the trek to the top of the first ridge line are treated to an expansive view of unbroken sand, nary a footprint to be found. As I left the dunes, I caught a lone hiker enjoying the sunset. His solitary presence gives a sense of scale to the magnitude of these dunes. The hike is deceptive with a seemingly modest 750-foot elevation gain, but it was definitely one of the more difficult hikes I've ever done!
